The Journey of a Lifetime
I want to share with you a poem that I wrote to my One and Only (at least in this lifetime), to my faithful companion of more than 50 years – the Body of mine. With deep appreciation, I’ve come to realize just how much my body has been there for me through thick and thin. How protective and wise it was, and thankfully still is. From surviving countless accidents and food poisoning to enduring environmental hazards, including radiation exposure from the Chornobyl disaster, Lyme disease, cancer, chemotherapy, and so on, my body has been my constant companion and my rock.
So I wrote this poem as a tribute to the lifelong love affair that I have with my body. It’s not always an easy partnership – I have my moments of selfishness and stubbornness, and I don’t always give my body the care and attention that it deserves. But through it all, my body has been there, gently whispering clues and urging me to slow down and take care of myself.
Often I need a reminder to take a moment to appreciate the incredible vessel that carries me through life. I hope this poem resonates with you.
To My One and Only
My friend, my keeper, my love all in one
My precious body is my closest partner for life
A body to cherish, a vessel to care
It’s not a short fling but a lifelong love affair
This partnership isn’t so easy, it’s true
Sometimes I take two steps forward and one step back, too
Some days I’m just brutally selfish and pushy
Demanding respect for my frivolous will
And blinded by notions that are seemingly grander
and smarter than the best adviser I have as my friend
I foolishly ruled a self-demised game
And during the times when I lost my way
My body was seeing me through, day after day
There were days when I was careless and even mean
I took it for granted, like a spoiled little queen
But my body never gave up on me, never once
Through all the trials and tribulations
It kept me going without hesitation
My faithful guide, my loyal friend in times of strife
my closest partner for life
My body knows me better than I know myself
It whispers clues when I’m feeling lost and unwell
It warns me when I’m pushing too hard
And urges me to rest, listen and be on guard
It is my faithful guide and my loyal friend
Never judging, always there… till the very end
It’s seen me through heartbreaks and triumphs
And helped me come out stronger and ready to thrive
Sometimes I forget to give my body the care it deserves
But it never gives up on me, always ready to serve
It reminds me to slow down, to breathe, to reset
To take a break and recharge, to give myself rest
In this lifelong love affair, I’m the first to admit
My body is a much better partner, never throwing a fit
I owe it not just my love, but my life too
For carrying me through thick and thin and for pulling me through
In this relationship there will be highs and lows
But the most important thing is to be present and to show
Love, respect, and support, attention and care
And together we’ll be a team through all we’ll share
