Nowadays, lemon honey water has become a popular way to start your day. A warm honey lemon water mixture draws its origins from the ancient science of Ayurveda, and offers enormous health benefits. Even though this morning drink is seemingly simple, there are specific guidelines to follow to receive the most benefits.

If you’re doing morning yoga, or meditation practices, you might want to include a couple more ingredients to your lemon honey water mixture to increase your flexibility, receptivity, and to support your body’s anti-cancerous capabilities. Here I’m sharing how I enjoy my lemon honey water, and we will take a look how and why lemon honey water benefits our body.

HONEY LEMON WATER – SETTING IT RIGHT

In order to start my morning successfully, I love to prepare the night before. I keep all of the ingredients right in my bedroom because I like to stay focused in the morning, and having all of it right here keeps me straight, you know what I mean?

The main two ingredients are lemon and local honey. And they pair together not by accident. In Ayurveda, the combination of lemon and honey creates the perfect balance to allow the system to receive the maximum benefits out of those powerful ingredients.

WARM LEMON / HONEY WATER BENEFITS

  • facilitates detoxification
  • improves digestion
  • cleanses the colon
  • promotes nutrient absorption
  • re-hydrates the body
  • stimulates cellular respiration
  • generates energy
  • boosts immunity
  • balances pH levels
  • reduces inflammation

Our stomach accumulates toxins over time. Ayurveda suggests that more diseases are initiated by the formation of dead bacteria, intestinal cells, and undigested food that coats the inner lining of our stomach. Drinking warm lemon honey water helps to gradually eliminate toxins from our body, cleanse the colon, promote nutrient absorption, and re-hydrate after a night of sleep.

Lemon-honey combination also generates more energy by stimulating the respiration of our cells. Warm lemon-honey mixture improves digestion by stimulating the function of the gall bladder. And by supporting liver and kidney function, it facilitates the detoxification process. Plus because lemon is one of the most alkalizing foods, it balances pH levels in our body and reduces inflammation.

COPPER ENRICHED WATER BENEFITS

  • supports the immune system
  • aids digestion
  • promotes collagen production
  • improves joint and skin health
  • helps with iron absorption
  • increases energy production

The next important ingredient is water. Several scientific studies now support Ayurveda and show that storing water in a copper vessel facilitates a natural purification process. Water rested overnight in a copper vessel accumulates certain qualities from the copper, and provides numerous health benefits. According to Ayurveda, drinking copper enriched water first thing in the morning helps balance all 3 doshas. This ensures the proper functioning of different organs and several metabolic processes as well.

Water from the copper vessel supports your immune system, aids digestion, and improves joint and skin health by promoting collagen production. Plus it helps you with iron absorption and increases energy generation.

NEEM / TURMERIC BENEFITS

  • cleanses the stomach
  • dilates the cellular structure of the body
  • facilitates absorption of energy
  • boosts the immune system
  • purifies the blood

I take my lemon honey water along with neem leaves and turmeric powder, and here is why.

The addition of neem-turmeric combination to the honey lemon water is a beautiful way of cleansing the stomach. Neem and turmeric as a combination is very conducive for yogic practices as well because it dilates the cellular structure of the body so it can absorb more energy.

Neem helps to boost your immune system and has blood purifying properties. It helps clear toxins and impurities from the body while boosting immunity. The neem turmeric combination helps with flexibility as well. The only thing is, it is not recommended to consume neem after 5 months of pregnancy.

I’m growing my own neem tree on my balcony so I have a plentiful supply of neem leaves, but you can acquire neem and turmeric in capsules or pressed tablets.

And there is one more thing I add to the mix… black pepper for better absorption.

Now I’m ready for the morning.

MAKING HONEY-LEMON WATER

After brushing my teeth, I start with grazing on neem leaves. Then I heat some water to mix it with the room temperature water from the copper vessel to achieve a lukewarm temperature. (no higher than 105 degrees F (40.5C))

To have the right water temperature is essential, not just for proper digestion, but to maintain the integrity of honey. If the water is too warm or hot, honey will have an opposite effect, producing toxins in the body and disturbing metabolism.

Then I juice half of the lemon, about 2 tablespoons. Fill up the glass with lukewarm water. Then I add turmeric powder. I love turmeric’s taste. If it’s too strong for you, you might be better off with turmeric capsules or tablets. I’m finishing up with the black pepper for proper digestion of the turmeric.

Now I’m ready for shower and my yoga practices after that.

I’m glad you find it helpful🙂🙏🏻 Yes Neem and turmeric should be taking daily. I have neem and turmeric in the morning, and then before my evening meditation, I have just 3 leaves of neem (no turmeric). I find it very conducive to my practice. A daily dose of turmeric shouldn’t exceed 1 teaspoon.

According to Ayurveda, honey cannot be added to warm/hot water. Because bees extract honey from both poisonous and non-poisonous flowers. The poisonous enzymes/properties are activated when they come in contact with warm/hot water, which, is harmful. Always lick a small spoon of honey on its own – which is more effective.

You are absolutely right, the water should never be over 40 ˚C. That is why I’m talking about it in this video. To have the right water temperature is essential, not just for proper digestion, but to maintain the integrity of honey. If the water is too warm or hot, honey will have the opposite effect, producing toxins in the body and disturbing metabolism.

Lukewarm water should be used for this drink and honey should be mixed in with water and here is why:

The lemon’s sour taste reduces Vata Dosha, and the mild acidity cleanses the Shrotas – the transportation and metabolism pathways in our body. Lemon in general is also detoxifying.

A strong sour taste would make the Shrotas contract, just like one pulls a face when biting into a lemon slice. Because narrower Shrotas would lead to more Ama (metabolism deposits) in the tissues and cells, Ayurveda buffers this unwanted effect by adding honey and thus creating an overall mild and pleasant taste. This not only upholds the lemon acid’s detoxifying effect, it even enhances it, as the taste of honey is not only sweet: it also has an astringent component, which reduces the heaviness and slowness of Kapha Dosha when diluted.

      🙏🏻

    5 stars
It was daily habit of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). And he always encouraged his companions to do the same- drinking water with honey every day in the morning after fajr prayer (before sunrise). Besides, he also encouraged them not to sleep after fajr prayers and something useful, and eat as less as possible after Isha prayers ( around 7-8 pm). And many other habits as well. If you learn the history, The prophet Muhammad and his companions nearly never felt ill due to their healthy daily habits. Scientists are now learning how useful these activities for our body.
