In my poem “The Shower of Life” I use rain as an allegory for the ups and downs of life. Through its gentle embraces and icy blasts, the rain symbolizes the transformative power of life, capable of soothing our souls and opening our eyes to new perspectives. This poem reflects on my journey through the stages of renewal, transformation, and self-discovery. Through my experiences, I discovered how embracing the challenges and opportunities that life presents can lead to a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us. I wrote this poem in 2015, so I pulled out a picture of me that is representative of those times.

The Shower of Life

A gentle rain, a warm embrace
It soothes the soul, wipes away the pain
But sometimes cold, like icy blades
It strikes with no chance to evade

With pressure strong, it rasps and scrubs
The baked-in crust with an icy blast
Scouring away the past, it opens the eyes
To a world so raw, so simple, yet wise

It reveals an eternal bond
With all within reach and beyond,
Now your vision is clear, and you timidly gaze,
at a shower of life, with its beauty unfolds

As you’re feeling exposed, open-hearted yet bold
Embracing all that it brings to behold
You see what’s important and what to retain
Now through pain, you’re refined and are new again.

You see clearly now the world that’s unfurled
With the things you need, always here
Awaiting for you to reach
Where it always being and always will be.

Life, as you know, is often surprising; it may be pleasant and cozy, but it can also be rigid and challenging. But, just like a shower, it has the ability to cleanse and purify us regardless of what life throws at us. We sometimes find it difficult to accept the things that life throws at us. We struggle against the tide, attempting to assert power over every element of our existence. But the thing is that by embracing what we can’t change, we may open the door to a whole new universe of possibilities; and by facing our fears, we emerge stronger, more resilient, and more connected to the world around us. And what’s more, the things that we need, the things that make us truly rich—are always within our reach. They are always there, waiting for us to hold.

So, here is my offering of Loving Kindness practice. The Loving-Kindness practice fosters growth, strength, courage, and a sense of connection. It can be a great way to start or end the day or to take a break from a busy or stressful day.
